Nope, usually there is something you have to tweak in order for the engine to run properly and very, very loud. Not good for the ears..Straight pipes are used mostly on drag racers and on Harley motorcycles so beware on noise laws where you are.

The simple answer is yes. However, performance will be adversly affected unless you make a few other modifications. Depending on the engine in question, it is very likely that you will need to alter the timing and also the fuel flow. The length of the pipe will also make a difference. Generally, the longer the pipe, the more the high end performance will be maintained. A shorter pipe will do the opposite but at very low engine rpm can actually increase torque marginally.
It is wise to consider the long-term effects on engine LIFE as these modifications go against the manufacturer's design.
With careful consideration, performance can be increased for racing etc but here the engine longevity is usually a minor consideration!

LOUD PIPES DONT SAVE LIVES. They just piss everyone off me included. stop watching the retards on Discovery channel
To answer question.
There is a reason they are called drag pipes
straight pipes only work correctly over a VERY narrow rpm range, maybe as little as 300rpm (you get max power at 11200 to 11,500 for example) you will have carburation issues and possibly valve and piston problems if you get it right ( or wrong depending on you viewpoint)
Get 'Scientific Design of Exhaust & Intake Systems' by Smith and Morrison if you want to know more.

Yes, but there is no reason to run an engine w/ straight pipes. You will usually hurt the engine more than help it and your low end torque will go bye bye.

Go ahead and experiment.
Loud pipes save lives, and usually impress the chicks.
You will be the envy of the neighborhood!

Not a good idea. If you decrease back pressure you need to run bigger jets in the carbs. Otherwise, you will decrease hp and performance and possibly burn exhaust valves.
