My 1992 dodge b250 van runs good and only blows a little black smoke until it gets warmed up. Then after you turn it off and wait maybe 5 minutes and try to crank it you have to hold it to the floor before it will crank and when it does it sounds like it is sucking way too much air and you have to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running. Then whenever you mash the gas it blows black smoke and it won't open up.The more you mash the gas, the more black smoke comes out the exhaust. "

Black smoke = too much gas
Or, not enough air.

Check your air filter first.

Blowing black smoke is an indication the mixture isn't being thoroughly combusted. Backfiring out the exhaust at the same time as the accelerator is "stomped" is an indication of incorrect timing. i'd examine timing first earlier jumping into the carb. examine the timing at idle and if excellent, the timing boost isn't operating. If timing at idle is incorrect, placed into ideal time if conceivable and paintings from there. there's a chance the engine has jumped time on the timing chain, the truck is 23 years previous and the timing chain is stretched i'm particular. If raw gasoline is exiting the tailpipe the cylinder walls are being scored with each and each rotation of the engine, because the gasoline will wipe away the skinny movie of oil latest for lubrication so upkeep must be done ASAP. there's a chance of the ignition gadget being defective and voltage being too low for sturdy spark, yet i'd examine timing first.

depends if its gas or diesel. if its a gas engine, oil burns blue, and coolant burns white, black is usually gas. which means its getting too much fuel, id start small with new spark plugs and wires. does it run smooth or shake alot?
