The worlds problems wont be solved in any forum. We have to trust our political representatives, because, as you say, Mr & Mrs Smith would make a complete hash of it. Incidently, that is why too many referenda would be a bad thing, that would be too much democracy. Unfortunately, the left wing TV media keep promoting mini polls of their ill informed viewers. It is as though the media are trying to run the country by exploiting their position.

We will never get a true idea of what the cross section of people on Answers think; because, for instance, as soon as a question is asked by anybody who mentions the M word ,the debate is stifled by the Yahoo censors and the Ms know how to exploit the situation. You notice I am being circumspect, well that is because any opinion that clashes with the aforesaid Ms is pulled off and a violation notice is sent. That's free speech ?The answers you see published are not really representative of all site users only those whose opinions are seen as acceptable. YOU are right in your question .

It depends what you mean by 'the Worlds problems'.
Yahoo answers has solved problems for many people, on a personal level.
But if you are thinking of giant issues like Famine, Global Warming, then you are just being realistic.
Yahoo! Answers by itself can do nothing, but it can affect the way people think and act, by making them aware of how other people think, and by learning from them.
Not everyone who comes to Yahoo! Answers has an open mind, but some do, and they benefit from what other people write, and it does change their world.
However, I am not sure Yahoo! Answers affects enough people to change Global Behaviour.
Furthermore there are people with their own agenda, and quite a bit of dis-information if not propaganda on Yahoo! Answers just as in any other media. So you do need to be a bit discerning to benefit from Yahoo! Answers.
I am quite sure Yahoo! Answers was not designed to solve 'the Worlds problems', but it does help solve people's problems, alleviate some excessive anger, sadness... or other negative emotion.
It helps people more than it harms people I guess.

You are assuming that the world's problems will never be an impending zombie Apocalypse, a baked potato recipe shortage, a quest to find the perfect shoes or a need for illegally downloaded mp3s. The minute one of them becomes a global issue it'll be Y! Answers to the rescue.

What do they say, "Solving the problems of the world, one problem at a time." Or something like that. What Yahoo! Answers does for me is to teach me about people and about computers. It also provides a opportunity to help, if I can. People get so focused on their problems, they completely forget self-care. All I do is say, "Hey, don't forget to include yourself in all this!" Thank you for letting me have my say. I focus on helping individuals, one by one. It works. But you really have to give a damn or your words will ring hollow. This is sent to you with good energies from Chris, in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years old. People matter a lot to me. People are what make a country.)

because we, the answere are not politicians, or leaders of any kind, we are just sleepless, wont' say the obviouse, o,k, a bit tipsy, or some may be stoned. So, it is a nice little AIRING. I think it is good, some good comes out of it, some cynical, some toungue in cheek, some rude, but it is a good idea for Yahoo. yes. and, some problems have been solved. It is a two way thing.

Everyone has a different life experience, this formulates their answer be it correct, moronic, fanatical, immature, racial or whatever.
We elect governments by voting for the person or party that has the manifesto most in common with our points of view. But even then we may not always agree with all of their decisions.
Any other system is anarchy or dictatorship.

But people do run countries.
If you come here expecting to find all the worlds' problems solved, then the problem is your exaggerated expectation, not Yahoo Answers. Be a bit less utopian, ask answerable questions and you might (or might not) be pleasantly surprised.

Yahoo! Answers is NOT a world changer, people. It's a website for people who are bored and need to blow off steam after a long day (which is all of us, most of the time).
