If you took your security very important you wouldn't need to ask it here at Yahoo! Answers because you probably won't get the desired answer.

Anyways, if you want a 100% way to prevent bugs and viruses is to disconnect you from the Internet and not allow your computer to read an external information (CDs, DVDs, zips, floppys, etc.).

But since we're in the 21st century and EVERYONE needs the Internet (yes, I am eliminating over 1/2 the population of the world when I say "everyone needs"), then you should limit your Internet connections to only "safe" sites. Safe sites include Yahoo!, Google, and MSN (I don't trust Microsoft's website one bit. ^^).

You should also have the proper software such as firewalls on at all times. This would prevent most unwanted connections to your computer (and can prevent some wanted one). Don't give out any information about your computer. Don't give out your IP and port numbers (unless you know what you are doing). Keep your ports secure and don't download any untrusted software.

If a friend sends you a site, don't click on it until you know what it does. Look at the hyperlink and check the extension of the file (.html, .htm, .php, etc.) If it is a .com (file extension, not domain extension) like http://asdf.com/rawr.com DON'T click it because a .com file extension is a type of file that is used for computer configuration. If you're not sure of a file extension, you can use Google. Type into Google's search box "define:FILEEXTENSION", for example, "define:.com".

Good luck on keeping your "home" safe!

Step 1: Firewall
If you have router, then you most likely have a harware firewall.
If you don't have a router, then you might consider picking up one on sale.

Alternatively use Window's Firewall (if XP) or ZoneAlarm's free firewall www.zonelabs.com
(NOTE: Some people say that you might have troubles if you run both, but a hardware firewall then either XP or Zone Alarm and you'll be fine).

Step 2: Anti Virus
DO NOT buy something like McAfee or Norton's. They could actually slow you down to a halt. Use something like the free AVG Anti-virus. http://free.grisoft.com

Step 3a: Real Time Anti spy.
Several choices here, but the two best I've found:
1) Windows Defender from microsoft.com (just search)
2) SpyGuard from JavaCoolSoftware.com

Step 3b: Spyware Prevention
Use Spyblaster from JavaCoolSoftware.com to help plug spy possible holes in your system.

Step 3c: Anti spy tools
Don't use just one!!! Fill your toolbox with several/All of these and run them at least once a week or so:
1) Norton Antispy via the Yahoo IE Toolbar.
2) Windows Defender (mentioned above)
3) Spybot Search and Destroy via http://www.spybot.info/ ( a little cryptic but good)
4) A Squared by www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free.
5) Lavasoft AD-AWARE SE Personal edition from http://www.lavasoft.de/default.shtml.en

WIth all the above, you should be set to prevent most problems.

Being a clinical psychiatrist I have a moral and legal obligation to keep my pc 100% clean from all virus/spyware/malware.

I tested every free and purchase antivirus system known. An I found only one that actually works 100%. Never had a virus or spyware in my system in nine years.

Go to, www.filseclab.com and download thier Twister AntiTrojan Virus program. (You will have to pay a small one time fee). You will never have to pay an annual fee for updates, support or new versions. The one time fee is for life. ($29.99)

The software company is located in Beijing, China. They have excellent support, frequent large signature updates an as always all new versions are free. No annual fee for anything.

Comes with a real time scanner that really works. Actually I am quite amazed over the nine years how well it works.

Scans memory on startup.
Real time scanning in the background.
Open any webpage with an embedded trojan/spyware or malware and scanner will clean on the spot. An It is really removed from your system.

Download any kind of program from zips, all compressed files, software files, music, etc, etc, an if there is a hidden embedded trojan, spyware, malware, this program will stop the download and clean. An will advise you to end the download.

Will even find a virus in the installer wizard, like "Wise Installer". And will stop the installation while it is being installed and clean. Plus this program always will trace back who installed the trojan.

I had a trojan in and wizard installer. Twister caught the trojan and stopped the installation. I wrote the origianl company and told them the wizard installer had an embedded trojan to steal your data. The company now uses thier own installer.

You can't beat this software for a one time purchase fee only. Actually I don't know of any antivirus progam that even comes close to this state of the art technology.

All I can say it is worth the one time fee. Your pc cost alot of money and you don't want it destroyed. Plus your privacy is protected at all times.

There is nothing in it for me to praise this program. I tell it like it is. If it is garbage then I will say so.

Make sure that your Microsoft critical updates are updated every second Tuesday of the month when they come out. Keep the current.

Make sure that you have a good firewall. If not use www.zonealarm.com -They have an excellent free firewall and you can all new versions for free.

Download from www.lavasoft.com their Ad-Aware Personal Se excellent program that has been around long before any software company came out with software against adware/malware.

Plus security or no security you need to take care not to enter into sites like Bit Torrent, P2P, (share file sites), porno sites, or crack houses where for sure you are going to be infected.

If you want to spend a little money, use what I use and the Goverment of China uses for an antivirus system. (Only run one antivirus system, in your pc). You can run more the one spyware without conflict.

The link is listed above for the China antivirus program.

Good luck,

If you have a legal version of windows xp or windows 2000 you can get a free program called Windows Defender.

For antivirus, don't get Norton! Norton will slow your computer down to a crawl and is crap at stopping viruses. If you want to pay for a good, reliable antivirus, Eset NOD32 is the best... they havnt missed a virus for 8 years!

Download Zonealarm for your firewall. Dont ever go to porn, warez, cracks or illegal serial code sites because they all download spyware onto your computer!! :s

Go here to get Windows Defender:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en

Go here to get NOD32:
http://www.eset.com/

Go here to get Zonealarm:
http://www.zonelabs.com

Good luck! :)

hi, perhaps you can try Norton to remove the virus and protect your PC. but you need to pay for the software

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

download firefox for free:

you are stuck with it like the rest of us. viruses can be removed but bugs cannot

however you'll get fewer viruses using firefox browser and thunderbird email client. but firefox loads pages slower than internet explorer. no matter what you do you always have to make sacrifices.
