The trick to this question is converting 5 3/4 % to a decimal so you can crunch it in your calculator.
I like to be really pedantic about these things because with all the fractions and whatnot flying around, you can make a arithmetic error...
So I would write 5 3/4% as 5.75 % first. I'm assuming you know how to convert a fraction into a decimal.
Remember that a % is something out of 100 or divided by 100 or
5.75 / 100, which gives you a nice decimal of .0575.
Now to find the sales tax paid, think of it as paying an additional 5 3/4 cents on every dollar of the item. Since the item is 42 dollars, multiply 42 by 0.0575
42 * 0.0575 = 2.415 or $2.42 (round up the penny) tax paid.
Hope this helps...
Good luck.
