I can't remember exactly but you should be able to find it on babycenter.com. I am thinking it is a few months.

According to "What to Expect the First Year"....

Newborns can see 8 to 14 inches right away (as far away as the breast or bottle). Also, newborns can only see black, white, red or yellow right away, since those colors have high contrast. Babies also love to look at light sources. If baby doesn't notice anything within 8 to 14 inches, you should contact his doctor.

In a few months, Baby can see much farther and can also see pastels. We were able to tell when my daughter could see farther because she would always smile at us when we came into the room.

You can find a copy of this book at most baby stores and any library. I got a copy from amazon.com for about 5 dollars.

Let's put it this way. At 7 months her baby will be able to see clearly across a room. So, at a week old, he can see you at about 6-12 inches away. Contrast colors are easier too. That's why alot of the newborn toys are black and white or primary colors.

They start seeing all the colors in a couple of weeks and start focusing around 3 months. You can tell by holding an object in front of him and moving it slowly back and forth and watching for when the eyes move together.

Babies are unable to see objects clearly until there about a month old. However, babies can only see objects about 10 inches from their face, but everything is still fuzzy for them.

I've heard it takes 8 weeks for him to see anything past his hand, and that's still kind of blurry. My own children seemed to recognize people around 10 weeks.
