Coat the cut surfaces with vaseline, and place it into a cool place (refrigerator, cooler, something like that) when not being displayed.

Also, do NOT use candles to illuminate. They will dry it out, and cause it to rot faster. Use cyalume sticks (the ones you bend and they light up....fairly cheap).

Most home and garden stores that sell pumpkins for halloween now carry a preservative. Mix it with warm water in a 5 gallon bucket and soak the cut pumpkin in it..preserves it and keeps it looking fresher much longer.

I agree with the Vaseline trick, it's pretty effective. Plus, don't set it out too early or carve it too soon, just to prolong your enjoyment.

Keep it in the shade is a big help. I would spray something like hair spray to keep the bugs off.
