I have a grade 11 Biology assignment, where me and my group have to figure out if indeed yeast breaks down glucose to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide. I just need to know how to prove this in an experiment.

Prepare a minimal broth medium (liquid) with glucose as the sole source of carbon . Inoculate this medium with the yeast.
1. If there is growth of yeast, it proves that glucose has been broken and utilised by the yeast.
2. Connect the culture tube containing the above to another tube containing lime water. The CO2 produced while utilising glucose will pass to the lime water turning it milky.
3. Remove the yeast ( by centrifugation/ filteration using Bacteria Proof Filters/ millipore/ Seitz filters). Detect the presence of ethanol using standard techniques.

Yeast goes through Alcoholic fermentation to break down glucose. It's not actually "breaking it down", it just converts it to Ethanol.

So basically, you just need to show the presence of ethanol alcohol.
