I replaced a Dell Optiplex 4600 Powersupply and it only the cpu fan came on. I found it was not the correct power supply for the unit. I have found the proper replacement and wondered if theres a significant probability that the first non-Dell power supply damaged anything. Should I order the proper power supply and if i do will the system be ok?

Oh, I removed the original power supply from it to repair a higher priority one for a client. So the PC is known to be fine.

how do you know the first power supply was bad in the first place ? it could have been the motherboard, unless you specifically tested either the motherboard with a known good power supply, or tested the power supply with a known good motherboard, and yes using the proper supplies for that board. be careful because you may order another PS and just have it do the same thing, if your motherbaord is whats bad

It most likely will be fine... A good sign was that the cpu fan worked so the cpu didn't have a chance to burn up... Unless the other power supply shorted and sent a charge through your components (see any smoke? LOL)it probably didn't harm anything.
