The brushes and springs fell out before I could see them and I don't know what order the brushes should be placed in around the commutator. Brushes 1 & 2 are on the positive side of the AC cord and 3 & 4 are on the negative side. I tried 1,3,2,4 and the gear did not throw out. I tried 1,2,3,4 and nothing happened except an electrical grinding noise.

Rotate the brushes 90 degrese to the battery "poles."
That way it rotates in the OTHER direction.

usually matching brushes are in opposing positions.
so as it rotates it is + - + -
that way you get the attraction between the opposite polarities.
