My roofer has given me the option to go with either GAF Timberline 30, Tamko Heritage or IKO Cambridge 30 AR shingles. He's pushing the IKO Cambridge 30 saying they are the thickest, but my skepticism makes me think maybe they are just the cheapest.

Any sugeestions?

I am paying him a flat rate for labor and supplies.

Both shingles should weigh about 260 lbs per square so the cambridge should not be any thicker than the Timberline. Are you paying him labor plus materials or simply by the square? Remember that it takes 4 bundles of arch. shingles to make a square. Make sure your invoice for what you are paying (total # of squares) equals what you see in your yard. This is where roofers really get ya. I would check to see if the shingles are impact resistant and algae/mold resistant. The algae is the ugly black you see on composition shingles. Impact resistant shingles will help you in a hail storm. With what ever you choose, make sure that the shingle in your yard is what you have paid for. There is not much difference in a 20 year(220 lbs per square) or 25 year(240 lbs per square) 3 tab comp shingle. I am glad to see that you have atleast gone with the arch. shingles - I believe 30 year is the lightest made -- still better than 3 tab.

Tamko Heritage Shingles

When it comes to shingles there are not to many factors that go into them, asphalt, filler, mat, and granules. As long as the shinges meet UL & ASTM standards they will, in most cases, function with out any problem.

With that being said I would choose my roof by what look I wanted. As well as what type of service is offered by the manufacturing company. Some companies offer a 30 year warrentee or longer on shingles if the roof was installed by a certified contractor. No matter what brand you go with make sure that the contractor is certified by that particular brand.

Of those brands listed GAF is the largest, in fact it is the largest roofing manufacturer in the nation. They did over 2 billion in sales last year.

Adressing other posters concerns:

Though it is true that weight can indicate thickness it is not a garantee. Depending on the density of the filler used and type of asphalt as well as the color and density of the granules weight can fluxuate greatly while maintaining thickness or vica versa.

I know for a fact that GAF Architectural shingles stood up to hurricane force winds and the warrentee will cover wind damage, leak, or any other problems as long as it is installed by a GAF certified contractor.

Look at every roof on Every house in the neighborhood...
I have the new roof shingles but have forgotten what they are called, the brand I mean...the style is Beacon Hill.
You will notice the new styled tiles right away...they are a big improvement over the older types. I found some of the roofer will tell you there is not much difference....that's because they have a warehouse full of tiles that are out of style and need to get rid of them. Don't fall for it...get the latest.

You didn;t mention where you were writing from but youmight want to consider where they are made.

All the shingles you mentioned are about the same. Assuming you got them algae resistant the brands you mentioned should all be impact resistant. You might want to check for wind warranties though I have found them to be UTTERLY useless.

So everything else being the same, buy the one that is made in your state and throw your local economy a little money!

I would go with IKO simply because its a better brand then the other two.

IKO has been in the business longer and i see more roofers using IKO products then any other brand.
