Or would this be considered a strategic move? My co-ed team lost a tournament because the opposing team refused to pitch to our men - and walked them everytime they were up to bat. Our girls were pitched to and did pretty good - under the circumstances. But, we lost by one run in extra innings. We were pissed - to say the least.

Duncan: please elaborate. Poor sportsmanship on who's part?

In this particular tournament, if a guy is pitched 4 consecutive "balls" with no strikes, than the female following him in the batting order gets to walk also. However, this team's pitcher would throw one strike and then intentionally walk our guys. Not too sure if they were proud of themselves - but they were sure desperate enough to do it.

Intentional walks of all kinds are discouraged in baseball. Why do you think the Giants play the chicken dance song accompanied by jeers from the fans every time they toss four balls to Bonds?

Bubba has it right... every co-ed league I've ever seen has rules that state:

1) Guys and Girls must alternate in the batting order
2) If you walk a guy, then the girl following him in the order automatically walks as well.

An alternative would be a rule strictly prohibiting the intentional walking of guys, but the alternating girl/guy batting order and "walk a guy, walk a girl" rule is really the best way to address this problem before it becomes an issue.

You should either suggest a rule change to the league office, hopefully to take effect immediately (since it makes so much sense) or, at any rate, to have that rule in place at the start of next season!

Good luck to you!!

Per ASA slowpitch rules, an intentional walk can be given by informing the plate umpire who then issues the award. In Co-Ed play, if a male is walked (intentionally, or not) he recieves a two base award. The following female hitter recieves a walk ONLY if there are two outs.

That's very poor sportsmanship. Although walking the guys may have been a good strategy for winning the game, unless you were playing for $, your opponent was making a mockery of your Co-ed softball league.

I play in a Co-ed league and if you walk a guy, the girl walks too.The batting order is guy girl, guy girl etc. This rule seems to work well

Intentional walking is always frowned upon. Since they were so obvious about it, I would say they are clearly poor sports.

You should check out the rules and make a formal complaint.
