well, I had a debate today and I need to know why or how you can tell if a philosopher is really a philosopher

Lover of knowledge, seeker of wisdom. Either way, the person would study many subjects just for the joy of learning. It is more important to learn than teach to a philosopher. All else is sophistry!

A philosopher is the guy who says philosophic statements.

Maybe this can help. The word philosopher in Greek means "seeker of wisdom". Does the person in question seek wisdom?

anyone can be a philosopher...
but i guess the present day definition would be to look at the number of followers.. or the number of people that live by or relate to those teachings.
