It's not just UV light that's important, it's specifically UVB. UVB is needed for proper Vitamin D3 systhesis which in turn is required for the dragon to properly utilize calcium. Without sufficient UVB your dragon is at risk of MBD.

It's also important to realize that UVB bulbs stop producing usable levels of UVB long before they burn out. Typically, most UVB flourescents are only good for 6-8 months and should be replaced every 6 months regardless of thier visible light output. ZooMeds Reptisun 5.0 and 10.0 product lines, however, are designed to last a year, though I would imagine other manufacturers will soon follow suite if they haven't started to already. UVB levels from Mercury Vapor bulbs generally drop off after a year or so and should be replaced yearly.

Replacing pricey bulbs is one of the downsides of owning a sun loving herp, but at least it's only $60-90 a year. And depending on the particular style bulb you use, you may be able to use it for auxilary lighting. Old MV bulbs might also be of use to electronics hobbyists for curing circuit boards while using a photoresist method of etching.

everything alive needs UV light. You use it to convert certain nutrients into vitamins and metabolize them.

Some things need more UV light than others. Lizzards are in cages usually away from the window. They need light, and the heat from light, and UV rays in order to be healthy.

They dont need it all the time. A few hours a couple times a day is enough.

because bearded dragons are a diurnal reptile all diurnal lizards must have uvb light to metabolise d3 and calcium otherwise they will die from metabolic bone disease. noctrnal reptiles (most snakes leopard geckos stuff like that) dont need uvb light there bodys are able to absorb calcuim but geckos still need calcium supplement. and no they dont need it all the time just about 10-12 hours a day

A 20gal tank will be nice for some months, yet you'll ultimately favor to boost the dimensions of the tank because it grows. I also propose getting a basking mild for one area of the tank. make certain you're providing a large decision of nutrients except protein depending stuff. Bearded dragons are omnivores and choose their greens to boot as somewhat fruit. you'll locate that once he's youthful he will be pickier about greens, yet as he receives older he will contain extra into his weight relief plan. inspect the area contained in the source line for weight relief plan info.

Because it is necessary to absorb and utiilize vitamin D3 and calcium. If it doesnt have UVB, its bones will not be healthy and it may get MBD (metabolic bone disease). I don't know WHY people buy reptiles without learning about this stuff first, so tell everyone you know!

Its very important, it helps their bodies absorb the nutrients from their food. They only need it durning daylight hours, so turn the light on in the morning and off at bed time.

I think that they need it all the time because they are probably native to the desert and use to extreme heating and light from the sun, it probably wouldn't hurt them not to have a light at night.
