If the UK government abolished all taxes except VAT and Duty on booze, fags, etc, would they have enough to still support the armed forces and pay themselves a bit?

I'm English before you ask.

I am English too. sad isn't it. So, your question.Answer is no.They could charge the same price for booze and fags as (we say) Europe, they would certainly make more money, but those health freeky people who demand higher penalties on ciggies tabac and booze, they are the people who are pushing the taxes for other things, including what there perfect world requires, like cars, pre pack m.and s. food, ...hey, do we want armed forces, what is that about. We are a tiny little island, who ran the world through rape, plunder, guts, knowledge and pillage. Now, we cannot run a bus on time....bye

Fair taxes are okay when they're not frittered away on bureaucracy and inefficient systems.

Plus, the moment you start to earn a decent wage they hit you with an effective 50% tax (40% income tax + 11% national insurance), so I'm effectively working half of all my time for the government, who then goes and wastes it.

What's even crapper is stamp duty on houses. If you buy a house for £250,000 you pay about £2-3000, but if you buy one for £250,001 you pay about £7-8000. I'd like to know how much of our tax goes to paying the idiots that think up such dimwitted systems.

Taxes are only crap if you pay em ;)
All tax should be banned because it doesn't benefit anyone except currupt people who slyly put it their swiss bank accounts... And fook us all up to make things worse by raising the taxes again!! The whole system is wrong... It should be abolished and get an honest genuine person into power.
And for Americans... Your taxes go towards funding terrorism... i.e your president... I've got nothing against Americans but your President is as currupt as they come... For example, the airplanes that hit the twin towers were military EC-10's and not commercial Boeing's.

I have no problem paying taxes because as a socialist I support the idea of everyone having access to free health and education etc. However I object to John Howard (Australia's PM) contributing such a massive amount of our taxes to the "War on Terror." That is not what my hard earned taxes should be going towards when we have education and health systems which are in dire need of more adequate funding.

In the USA taxes are killing us. Everything you even want to look at will be taxed before you know it. By the time the government is finished with your weekly pay and then you pay taxes on everything you buy they are taking 40 % of your pay. Pretty soon we will be working just to make sure they get their pay.

The UK and the US both, I am from the US, should end their tax system.
We have the IRS here in our country, I don't know what you guys have. We need a flat tax where our payroll tax and corporate taxes end. It would increase hiring and put more money in our pockets and a 23% consumption tax would actually put more money in the gvt coffers.

Taxes are necesary in every country its how they are administered that is the problem. Also if everybody paid their dues and demands Taxes would not be as high. The poll tax although unpopular was a fair tax in every way.At present a house with one person in is charged the same as one with 8 living in it.But the single occupant does not place the demands on services that the other does.Have a good life you will change nothing beleive me.

yes, taxes are awful, but its how we fund this fine nation state. before you whinge on, think what the government does for you, in ways which you dont consider. the NHS, education..well you went to schol didint you? and after you retire..a state pension... and before you screeam its nowhere near enough..i say, im in a wheelchair, and for 25 years ive lived quite happily on state benefits...they look after all my medical needs...

and before you say anything, I too am English, and i paid my taxes...i left school on friday, and started working and paying tax on tuesday... (it was a bank holiday)

its put my kids thru school, and they're off to university.. so stop moaning and pay your taxes..just like everyone else..even me. yes, they tax my disability pension...

Ah yes - perhaps. But what about health care? And roads? Education, sanitation, police, judiciary, transportation infrastructure, customs and border patrol, ports, airports, . . . and then all the special interests; marmite subsidies, conservative transsexual multi-ethnic mp's, etc.

I'd think all of England would have to drink and smoke constantly to support all that. Of course, if you drank and smoked constantly, they'd probably change your name to Ireland . . .

i wouldn't mind if the tax I'm paying wasn't going of opening centres for asylum seekers and immigrants who sponge off us and opening rehab centres for drunks and druggies
