The term American has been diluted over the past 50 or so years. Before that time an American was John Wayne, The Lone Ranger and that type of White Hat Cowboy wearing stereotypes.

Now an American can be anything from a Yuppie, Metro-Sexual, Homosexual, Bi-Sexual or anything else the imagination can come up with.

In another 50 years I doubt we will be called Americans anymore as it will morph into some politically correct term like The Northern Continent Homo-Sapiens.

As to not offend anyone who doesn’t live on the Northern Continent.

An American is someone who hails from the Americas - the land mass from northern Canada to the southern tip of Chile. It is essentially the whole "new world". They are too diverse a lot to sum up in any one idea or sentence.

Technically, an American is anyone who has United States citizenship. You can achieve this by being born on U.S. terrority or by going through the INS.

Culturally speaking, what is "American" is completely open to interpretation.
