A former employer used to do this - if you are in financial trouble, the theory is that you are more likely to steal from the company.

Some companies use credit checks to determine what kind of "risk" a person may be to the company.

For instance some government jobs require a credit check because people use money as a lure to get people to sell secrets.

If you are looking for a position where money is involved (cash register access or accounting/payroll functions) where you might have a chance to get access to funds, they want to make sure you are not majorly in debt where you might try to embezzle funds.

From a more subtle angle, they may want to see that you are capable of being responsible and disciplined.

They want to see how you pay your bills. If you pay attention to your personal business, you'll probably pay attention to theirs. If you've quit paying your bills, they might hold that against you.

some jobs do that here, you can refuse, the ones that do it here are looking to see if you are reliable.
