If you wish to find the mean of 3 numbers (this is one type of average)

add them all together and divide the total by 3

I'll give you an example. You had three tests since you went back to school and on the first test you made a 95. On the second one you made 100. And on the last one you made a 90. What is your average after the third test? First add 95+100+90= 285. Then take 285 and divide by 3(the tests you have taken) and you get the answer 95. The way to see if you are correct is to say 95 x 3 = 285.
