First things first. Why are you thinking of switching your major? Do you absolutely love the idea of taking care of little children every day - five days a week? If your answer is yes, then nothing should stop you from switching your major to Early Childhood Education.

Depending on the laws of your particular state, you will need at least a Bachelor degree in Education and at best a Masters in Early Childhood Education.

More and more mothers return to the work force after their maternity leave is finished - they need truly dedicated people who love little children and value their place in our world to take care of their children.

Check out the state you are thinking of working in - find out what the requirements are for Day Care owner.

Good luck to you! You may not make a fortune but you will go home every night knowing you made a difference in the life of a child and ultimately in the world.

running a day care normally requires certain state licenses. I'd take a look at any course requirements they have, though usually you'd have to pass an exam of some sort, which they would typically have companies that can prepare you for the test.

On the other hand, a business degree, with a concentration in entrepreneurship would probably serve you well, as you will need to know how to market and sell your services if you want to be successful in the long run. Understanding the accounting aspects would also help.

Early childhood development courses would probably enable you to charge more, if you had a more advanced program for the kids.

Good luck.

For one you need to have a degree in Early Childhood development or Education specializing in Preschool to Kindergarten. Then you have to go through all kinds of legal work with the state you live in to get the licensing and you have to have insurance because if something happens to the child you're covered so that some rambunctious lawsuit happy parent can't take your buisness because their kid injured herself or himself at your center and you're not at fault for them hurting themselves from playing. Research the cost to insure someone who wants to open a day care center. You also need to have a certification in CPR because by law you must have that and you also need to require that for anyone you hire as well. You will have to go through a fingerprint background check with the state police so it's on file so you're clear of all felonies and have no criminal background. You also need to look at locations that you want to open your day care center up and make sure it's up to code and suitable for children to be in and find out the capital(money) needed to build and construct your place and most of all make sure your place is kept up meaning if the city and state health department come in to inspect the place make sure that it's clean and organized and not a safety hazzard for children and that your credentials are visible so that people know you are up to date with all credentials, licensing and insured. Consider a website to advertise your buisness and put out some cards and flyers. Make sure that you maintain hours that fit the schedule of many working parents since you will get a huge number of single parents who need someone to watch their child while they're at work and maintain hours from like 6am to 6pm. There's a place near my home in Chicago that's a 24 hour day care since so many single parents work different hours and not the typical 9 to 5 and need someone to watch their child while they're at work which is a pratical way to accomodate off beat and peak hour work schedules. Also make sure you got a good head for buisness because this is a competitive field and many don't survive because if you have infractions with the state and city for safety and health violations people arent going to recommend you or bring their kids there if your establishment isnt kept up with standards.
