I have had 2 children, both using an epidural, Which does NOT cause a birth defect. If anything it will help you alot with the pain, and should make him more at ease as you would be in less pain. The only side effect that was really explained to me was you may have a headache from it, but who doesn't after pushing out a BABY! If you are concerned ask the doctor about it, and remind your boyfriend that you are the one giving birth and in th e PAIN!!!

The only thing I've ever heard negative about an epidural was that the doctor couldn't get it to work with my friend's labor. Other than that I doubt it would cause a birth defect. Any birth defect your child is going to be born with it will already have by that time. Hopefully none :)

There should be no chances of that. The only think that I have ever heard of Epidurals doing regarding a baby is when the baby is born, they could possibly feel the effect on the drug, but they could feel that with any drug you use to ease the labor but that isn't a birth defect. Take him to the doctor with you and let your Dr. explain your options and risks.

No, i dont think so. When the time comes to get an epidural, ur about to give birth anyways, so I think it's pretty safe. However, I have had 2 and well, no birth defects are present, a serious back ache is.

If he had to go through labor I'm sure he wouldn't be so worried.
As far as I know, there are no known birth defects. Sometimes babies appear a little more groggy, but that's it.
If you need an epidural, then have one.
I didn't have one for 24 hours, but at the 25 hour mark they wheeled me in for a C-section so I had to have one. Cost me $800 too!

I wouldn't think birth defects; that would have to be something WHILE the baby is developing in the womb; and epidural is when you're pushing the thing out. I've heard epidurals can sometimes (very rarely) give the mother problems but babies?

No they don't cause birth defects, I had it with all 3 of my children and that was not a risk, but there are risks so ask your doctor. Also like 80% of women use it so I'm sure if it was risky that many women wouldn't use it. Some risks that i'm aware of are future back pains, nausea and vomiting i threw up with my 2nd child right after I had him, and uncontrollable shivering, u think you're cold but when u cover yourself it doesn't help! good luck but i don't regret getting it, with my 3rd child it didn't really work and I felt all the pain, the nurses were like please be quiet we have other patients, u can not tell a woman in labor to be quiet no matter what medication they're on.

An epidural has nothing to do with birth defects. Birth defects happen as the fetus is developing, not during delivery.

A birth defect would happen while the child is devloping not while giving birth so no that will not cause any birth defects and it is really good to discuse this kind of stuff with your doctor or any other conserns you may have before delivery is sappose to happen so all worries are taken care of

the epidural has nothing to do with birth defects. the defect if any would be known long before labor starts.
