Functions

The most obvious function of bone is to: (1)support the body. It also the (2) site of haematopoiesis, the manufacture of blood cells, that takes place in bone marrow (which is why bone marrow cancer is very often a terminal disease). It is also necessary for (3) protection of vital organs. (4) Movement in vertebrates is dependent on the skeletal muscles, which are attached to the skeleton by tendons. Without the skeleton to give leverage, movement would be greatly restricted. Bone also serves as a (4) mineral storage deposit in which nutrients can be stored and retrieved.

The bony skeleton has a number of functions.

It is the anchor for the musculoskeletal system and allows us to move.

It is a protection for vital organs - rib cage about lungs and heart, skull about the brain, pelvis about female reproductive organs

It stores calcium and phosphate

It is the site of formation of blood cells (in the bone marrow)

Functions of the human skeleton:

a. Framework - provides the basic frame on which all the parts of the body is crafted.

b. Support - transfer the weight and forces to the right places, enabling the body system to have strength.

c. Protection - e.g, rib cage protects the lungs, skull protects the brain.

d. Form - helps to define the basic shape and form of each part of the body.

e. Locomotion - enables locomotion with its joints, e.g. ball and socket joints of the hip and knees.

f. Compartments - keeps organs in specific locations, e.g. rib cage.

To help maintain form, to help keep organs seperate and provide them with enough space and the right structures to function (imagine how hard breathing would be without a skeleton). To aid movement- far easier to manipulate solid limbs than to slither away, I suppose.

Without out it you would be a pile of flesh. It gives you stability, mobility and keeps your head attached to your body. You would not have been able to type your question without it.
