First off, what do you too have in common that makes you think you'd hit it off? Are you interested in her because she's the most popular girl in school or because she actually has some depth to her that you find appealing? And if it's the second part, are you even worthy?
If you think you are, I think your best bet would be to simply, calmly, & privately point these things out to her in a way that will convince her that you have something to offer her and that'll leave her wanting to know more about you. Find out something about her that you do have in common or that you're interested in and ask her about it. Do it in a convincing way so she'll realize you aren't just another silly stalker type that simply wants to be tied to her name.
Oh & you usually can't go wrong if you figure out a way to give a girl a small token of affection & interest... Gifts are always welcome so long as they aren't creepy.
Be prepared to be shot down in a humiliating fashion though. Girls like that are attuned to biting guys' heads off the moment they sense they're insincere so be further prepared to call her on it.

You don't need a clever idea - you need the balls to walk up to her and tell her that you'd like to take her out.
