the reason for short episodes is because most anime were originaly comic strips, and unlike ameerican cartoons, anime actualy have a storyline and a real plot. Not just countless episode after episodes like american cartoons.
(you don't complain about books that have 26-60 chapters, do you? thats how long it took to tell the story.)
so it usually takes withen 26 episodes to tell the whole story. some anime(like Inuyasha) go on longer, because there is more story to tell, and more character development with each episode, but still a main plot.
they are actually doing something and there WILL be an ending in anime episodes.
american cartoons just go on and on with no real story line. just characters and a new episode that is created and thought off by a group of story developers. like the Simpsons (is there really a plot/point to that show, or will it just keep going for no reason.)
in anime on the other hand, actually has a plot and ending before the show is even put into development. so the story is told and then like a book, comes the ending...
EXAMPLE:
look at yu yu hakusho, there was character development, lessons and an awsome plot, then came the end which fit into everything that happened in past episodes.
Vandread - everthing needed to happen then came the life lessons and the plot, then a suitible ending. everything fit together.
Elfen Lied - only 13 episodes but everything that needed to happen, happened. and it was a great anime. which also proves that it has nothing to do with 26 weeks being half a year and that rubbish.

i agree with abfabmom1 and I think its also because if they stretch out the anime too much, there are going to be too many filler episodes and the storyline will eventually become boring or stupid. example: Naruto, Bleach. Both of them used to be decent but then the creators made over 100 episodes. Personally I prefer anime that is good but after 26 episodes has a conclusion that wraps up all that happened.

Maybe it has something to do with the number 26 itself, sort of. You figure they show an episode once every week for 26 weeks. 26 weeks, that give you half of a year, which of course is 52 weeks. Maybe they spend the second half of the year coming up with new episodes. Either that or it has to do with some restriction put forth by the Japanese government.

To make an Anime it costs alot of money.
Most of the Anime's that are over 26 episodes were well-funded or had very bad animation.
Usually they start out with only enough money for 26 episodes and if they do really well, they can keep going.
Sometimes the manga wasnt even long enough to be made into a 26 episode anime (like fooli cooli) so they just stretch it out.

Because a lot of times, the manga isn't finished before the series is created, or the manga originally is broken into many different groups, like Ai Yori Aoshi, which only has about 20-some eps and then another series called Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi, with 12 more

26 episodes isn't that short... there are some animes which are too long... (Ex: Yu Gi Oh, Inuyasha, Prince of Tennis...)
I guess many of them are only about 26 episodes because they may have run out of ideas...

some human beings dont get it or each and each of the hype of it, i dont somewhat understand because ive beloved it for the reason that i discussed ghost contained in the shell at the same time as i changed into 8, one in each of my acquaintances idea i changed into extraordinary reason i watched it. it could be because the storylines will be somewhat accessible, or the're grew to change into away through the paintings itself. inspite of the reality that it ought to no longer look like it there somewhat are a loot of diverse drawing sorts of anime. There are even somethings i turn far off from because i dont like the way the paintings seems. it would also be that all they have considered only had an undesirable storyline.
