John can build half of a fence in a day. Bill can build 1/5th of a fence in a day. Working together, they will work X days.

X/2+X/5=1 whole fence.

5X+2X=10 (multiply both sides by 10)

7X=10. X=10/7 days for them to build the fence when they work together.

why would it take the two 3 days if we already know john has it done in two days...hmmmmm?? we know Bill can't do it in two days by himself so maybe he can just help John during the two days of work... My guess is 2 days
