It's not a myth. It's not exactly correct to say they were 'dolphins' ... but the *ancestors* of modern dolphins and whales were indeed land animals (as they are mammals).
Dolphin embryos still have rear leg buds ... here's a photo:

No, dolphins never "walked the planet" because they lack functional hindlimbs and their forelimbs are flippers.
However, the ancestors of dolphins were ungulate tetrapods, and they did.
