What permits are needed when transporting food into and out of the states? As a transportation company, what permits do you need?

It would be food like, fruits,vegetables, possibly dried or canned goods (Grocery store type items). He's been driving for about 30 years now.

It depends on what kind of food and where it is going. Give me more information and can help you. I have 20 years in the trucking industry.

If it is going into Canada he would simply need to get a Customs Broker and clear customs with it. That is simple enough to do. He would simply fill out the customs forms and clear customs. The broker that he gets the load from should do this for him. Supply the correct forms. From time to time they will have you back into a dock and they will unload it to inspect it, that is mostly true with produce and boxed meat, they really don't trip to much on canned goods.

He can not haul goods from one point in Canada to another. He can load in Canada and bring it back to the states, and again going through customs.

When going through customs they may very well search his truck, so make sure he has no guns, or anything that will get him put into jail.

Hauling state to state he needs no more than the truck permits (IFTA).

If he needs some good brokers e-mail me and I can give you a list of brokers that will advance and PAY ON TIME.

I sold my company and bought a repo company because I was tired of dealing with brokers, however if he has a good truck an wants to do something different I can hook him up with the company I worked for during the spring-Summer and fall months hauling bands for concerts.

Produce / dry fright pays about 1.30 a mile concerts paid 1775.00 a week base pay plus 1.50 a mile about 5,000.00 a week.

You don't really need a permit unless you're transporting food that requires refrigeration and kept cold because perishable items are needed to be delivered in a timely manner. You have to be insured because you dont want to deliver bad food to places because you can be held liable. You have to have trucks that are up to code and are fitted with the appropriate equipment such as a refrigeration unit since you're transporting fruits and veggies across the country and this also goes for meat. As far as canned goods is concerned the answer is no, but you need to make sure that when you make a delivery that you are not delivering items that are damaged and dented because the person who ordered the stuff can and will refuse it. Make sure that when you get an order have it to your destination in a timely manner.
