Learned. However you can learn from a relative to have a submissive personality.

Much more genetic than learned. Look at animal packs, there's alphas and betas. A dominant with an environment that tries to break it will rebel and act out. You cannot turn him or her into a submissive. And a submissive would be very unhappy if called upon by either birth order or anything else to shoulder leadership responsibilities.

Definitely learned. Once learned, this behaviour can be used for many purposes, like not doing things when one can or blocking the work of others. It could be called negative assertiveness. It can also be used to control another person.

I believe it is both; out genetics affect us in ways we are just only beginning to understand. Though, do not discount nurturing, the way we are raised and what we are exposed to plays a huge factor in determining what type of personality we will develop.

Why do you people stick to this false dichotomy? This question is like asking if your height is genetic, or environmental; when you know that it has something to do with your parents height and something to do with your nutritional intake. Come on people, just because this is social science does not mean you do not have to think.

There is a never-ending argument on the effects of heredity vs. environment on any kind of personality trait. So, you decide which you wish to side with. All the best.
