What was it about Seattle back in the late 80s/early 90s that this huge # of grunge bands(Nirvana, Alice In Chains, etc) suddenly burst onto the scene? I'm just curious

It was about the clubs that were set up to really let you get up close to the various bands & the talent bookers that were giving the garage bands a chance you excel. You shoulda been there, nothing like that will ever happen to easily again.

Course it mighta been all the coffee hyping people & all the rain forcing them to stay indoors too :-)

Nothing. Some dipschidt music hack decided to try marketing a "new" genre of music to the masses. Taking the name from the quote by Mark Arm ("Pure grunge, pure s h i t."), whoever decided to sell it to a major label realized that he couldn't market it as "s h i t" music.

The fact that newer bands are reluctant to categorize themselves as "grunge" should tell you something.

Smashing Pumkins are considered grunge (#2 on the F-list), and predate the Seattle Exodus (1988), and come from Chicago.

Nirvana takes a great deal of influence from the Pixies (soft verse, hard chorus), who are from Boston, and also predates the Grunge movement (1986)

Go figure.

It was what was chosen to replace the "glam" bands. Almost seen as the opposite to them. Rather then being all glittered up they were grunge and looked like crap.
