I have a woodburning stove. How often should I get the chimney cleaned out as to prevent a chimney fire?

How much does this service cost?

Thanks!

You should have it cleaned every year, you would not believe the amount of creasote that you will get out of it, you can buy the brushes and do it yourself. My husband used galvanized pipe and a few fittings and made a pole to put the brush on, you only have to ram it up and down a few times to get it cleaned, takes longer to get on the roof and remove the rain cap than to clean it out. Check at your local hardware store or Lowes for the chimmney brushes, they come in all sizes.

Clean your chimney when the build up reaches 1/8" in thickness and Inspect for this every year before the burning season begins.
If you only burn seasoned (Dry) Fire Wood you will not have to clean the chimney very often. Be cautious of those guys selling fire wood door to door BC in my experience that wood is hardly ever seasoned (Dry) BC they sell a lot of fire wood and have to cut more than they seasoned to keep up with demands.

You opened a can of worms here, Do you have a one story house or over, Do you burn green wood or dried?. Get yourself a mirrow and in the day time hold it to look up in chimney, LOOK for the hole going up closing off with loose creosote, If it is just loose stuff get yourself an chain(Big logging chain about 3 to 4 foot long, tie it on a rope and let it down in chimney and wave it around so the loose stuff will fall off. If the Creosote is baked on and hard as glass then you will probably need an chimney sweep (Professional) to do the job, If you stay after it at least once a year shouldN'T have much trouble. My chimney is on the side of the house and I let it catch a fire on purpose to burn all the stuff out of it, But I built the chimney and know how its built and the fire will not hurt it, Don't under any circomstamce put water down a hot chimney it will crack the lining.
Hope this helps
