I need help.........?

At school, there is an Indian guy. He is my friend. Today at recess, someone joked about him being Indian. Everyone in my class heard it and started to laugh a lot. He saw that everyone was laughing, but thinks I am a racist because I laughed at a perfectly timed joke that I DIDN'T MAKE. How do I handle this situation?
