First of all, dial up internet is slow - like really slow.
The difference between 50k and 11k is much less than you might think. Especially when compared to 700+k of minimum DSL or Cable. Both go much higher than that, depends on your wallet.

One thing if you are stuck with dial up is to check your connection. Pick up your phone when no one is on and push a button (any number but 0). You should hear absolutely nothing (until the cpu comes on and tells you to dial again...) Any buzz or noise will greatly slow down your dial up internet because it makes your modem resend information several times to get it through the noise.
If you are reasonably handy, you could go over the connections where your modem wire plugs into the wall, and where the wire connects to the phone co interface outside on the wall and any possible connections in the basement, etc.. Both of these will probably have simple screw connections that can get corroded. Loosen the screws, remove the wire (one at a time) and clean them with a bit of steel wool or fine sand paper. Do the same for the terminal plate that the wire is screwed down to. Even scratching it with the tip of a penknife several times can help. Reattach the wire using moderate force. Don't get too rough on it because these things can break off fairly easily. Repeat for each wire and each connection. You could also coat the terminals with anti-corrosive paste sold for the purpose at Radio Shack and other places. It usually is a sort of grease with zinc oxide in it.
BTW the phone color code for only one line is red and green (not black, white, yellow, or blue) Those are the colors of the common wire with six colored wires inside. If you only do one wire at a time, you don't have to worry about the color code.
Also, if you do get them all apart and find that you can receive calls but get no touch tone to dial out, then the red and green are reversed. It won't matter on antique "pulse" systems if you still have one of those...
IF there is still noise on the line, then the line is defective and you should call your phone co and complain. You are supposed to have a quiet line even for basic phone calls.
Good luck.

it may be in the wireless types, 802.11g will run at 54mbps but some older ones will run much slower, also it wont matter, if youre on a 3mbps dsl connection your still way under the threshold, and a 3mbps connection is alot faster than most people have, downloads over 400k a second... and your hard drive only really can write/read at 20mbps in most cases, although some run much faster and some slower, if it really pesters you that much for bragging rights, go to a site like outpost and look for network cards but before that you HAVE to figure out what type of network youre using

It depends. are you talking about downloading straight from the Internet or in a program. It might be your Internet configuration, could be your browser, or could just be your computer can't handle anything faster. some websites only have a certain maximum download rate.
