I've got several sources of this question.........
(1) A pile is the foundation for a bulding
(2) deriviative of piling on, stacking one thing on top of another, in the case of dog-piling you are stakcing one person on top of another.....for the purpose of pulling a prank, or tackling a person as a football move
(3) pile could also be used in reference to excrement laid by an animal.

I believe it came from the fact that dogs used to pile on top of each other for games or in rare cases fights. I would not use this information for a report or something like that as it is just a suggestion. =p hope it helped.

Here's what wikipedia has to say about dog piles:

Upon consideration, I can't help but think that people in a dog pile might resemble a "dog pile" left in the backyard... totally baseless conclusion though.
