I have accused some of my favorite musicians of 'selling out'. I am very careful when i say it b/c artists evolve and i do not want to confuse evolution and growth of music with a group that 'just wants to be liked'. Bands like REM and Pearl Jam have never compromised their music or image to be what sells. In my opinion bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 have. I have been listening to these bands (not pearl jam) since the early 80's and have seen these bands grow. Regardless of the world work U2 does, what changed for me with U2 was a concert i watched in the late 90's when the camera started at Bono's feet and panned up his body stopping in the crotch area for a short vacation. I was horrified. I still like most of the 'sell out' bands...oh oh oh...Jewel is no longer a favorite..i am not sure what happened to her.

I think that musicians will get more respect for doin their own thing. But they need to realize what kind of songs are at the top of the charts and that is how you can keep the majority of the audience interested. For instance, we all like 2 dance to the butt-shaking stars from these rappers coming out, but we don't recognize some of the talents from the lesser-knowns. It's a sad truth and I think that more musicians need to stay true to who they are. It is hard to get signed when u are too different though unfortunately because the record companies know what sells!

i myself have done that. like with metallica. when i first started listening to them they were just heavy and raw sounding. then they started putting out radio friendly songs. and it changed alot of peoples thinking about them.and there are 2 ways to look at it. for one they were already rich and famous and probably would have shows sold out even if they would have kept doing the style they were doing that made them famous. because that was the style that got them there fan base they might be selling out there shows but they lost alot of there fans when they changed their style

I think it is the musicians business.
I like a particular entertainer because of their talents not their politics.
