Mysteries: Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark, Tony Hillerman, Ngaio Marsh, Anne Perry, Dorothy Sayers, Margaret Truman. All have written way too many books to cite individual titles.
Horror: Not much my favorite genre, but Dracula is the overwhelming classic, and of course Frankenstein. I have not even tried the more recent works, because they tend to be too graphic for my tastes. I tend to read at the dinner table . . .

I like both genres so, here goes. I read more horror/fantasy than anything else but I do enjoy a little mystery every now and then.
Mystery: James Patterson (his Alex Cross series) and John Sandford are some of my favorites. I also read Nora Roberts on occassion.
Horror: Bram Stoker's Dracula is wonderful. More modern authors I like are Kim Harrison, Michelle Clay, Dean Koontz, some Stephen King. Anne Rice's Interview with the vampire is a good one as well.

For a good mystery read almost anything by Agatha Christie and of course any Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. For horror are you wanting more real life horror try The Girl Next Door or any book by Jack Ketchum. If you want something more fantastic try Neil Gaiman. I highly recommend all Neil Gaiman's books.

Oooh, if you like period mysteries, then Ellis Peters writes about Brother Cadfael of Shrewsbury Abbey (Cadfael Chronicles), which are set in medieval England. Anne Perry writes the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries or the Inspector Monk series, which are both set in Victorian England. They are really fun reading if you like that kind of thing.
I haven't read many fictional horror books, but I remember reading several Edgar Allen Poe stories a few years ago and they scared the poop out of me. Anne Rice is pretty good, though. I wouldn't not suggest her novels.

mystery...anything by Anne Perry, she has a coupe of different series of mysteries. You don't need to but they would be more fun if you start at the beginning. Also anything by Tess Gerritson, Jonathan Kellerman, Sara Paretsky, Sandra Brown, or for horror of course Stephen King(especially the early stuff) or Dean Koontz. Read on and enjoy.

I don't know about mystery, but if you want a good horror book read "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten... personally i don't think it's all that scary, but it was under "horror" in the library and the "Meg" series is definitely in my top 10

Any of James Patterson's mystery books are good. No Second Chance by Harlen Coben is also very good.

The best horror writer out there is Clive Barker. His stories always have a moral of good over evil!

I liked 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker. A girl may relate to it more because of the female lead, Mina, in the story. Its a classic. Mr. Stoker was Irish I believe.
