Olympis Track events:
- sprints (100m, 200m, 400m),
- middle-distance running (800m and 1500m)
- long-distance running (5000m and 10,000m),
- hurdling (100m and 400m for women, 110m and 400m for men),
- relays (4 x 100m and 4 x 400m)
- 3000m steeplechase.
Olympic Road events
consist of the men's and women's marathons, the men's 20km and 50km race walks and the women's 10km race walk.

I think there is no limit except that you might not be able to juggle too many because of the schedules.
If you are asking how many running events there are then here goes:
1. Sprints 100, 200 & 400 meters.
2. Middle Distance 800, 1500 & 3000 meters.
3. Long Distance 5000, 10000 meters and the Marathon.
4. Steeple Chase is 3000 meters I think.
5. Relays 4 X 100, 4 X 400, 4 X 800 and 4 X 1500 meters.

I can think of no more except of course the races within the Heptathlon and Decathlon.
