Toyota 4Runner.
They are built to last 250K miles. Anecdotally, they last forever. Statistically, the resale value is among the highest of any mass produced car.
The Nissan Pathfinders from the mid-nineties made a run on the 4Runner's supremacy, but early 00s design modifications put the Nissans back a step (although the Xterra has held up remarkably well in its short run.)
It isn't the most stylish or gadget filled ride out there, and you can certainly pick a fad car like a Hummer or Denali, but for reliability and performance per dollar spent - you can't beat the Toyota 4Runner.

Most SUV's are decent vehicles out there. It is a matter of how much you want to spend. Economy wise, yes, the RAV4 is a great little truck. For intermediate economy but more of a work horse the 4 Runner is right up there. If you have the money and not worried about economy, than almost any upper class foreign or domestic will serve you well. The Hummer is as extreme as you get. Really not usefull for everyday driving, hard ride and poor fuel mileage and expensive on repairs. So you need to answer your question with your own answer.
"What is the best SUV for the money?"
Good Luck

In the mid-size class, it is definitely the Ford Explorer. It offers up to seven-passenger seating, has an optional V-8, and can tow almost as much weight as a full-size truck (Other than diesel), and offers decent gas mileage. Full Size would probably be the Chevy Tahoe, with the exception that there are still some bugs with their newest version. My buddy's wife bought the 2006 Tahoe, but had problems with the automatic rear hatch, the power windows, and the radio. Other than that, it has a quiet ride and is very roomy and comfortable. Compact SUV is probably either the Toyota RAV-4 or the Ford Excape.

Being an auto tech. for about 12 years I can tell you , you can never go wrong with a Toyota. The cost of maintenance is cheap. If you buy a Hummer you will always have a car payment (up keep).

Chevy Trailblazer. Best alround combination of price, power, towing, ride comfort, offroad ability, onroad ability, etc.
P.S. I don't have one (a friend does). I have drive Jeep's (Liberty & Cherokee) & it's better than both those.
RIght now I drive a Corvette, so I always need help moving things, etc.
