If we've evolved to want to be a part of the herd, then why is individuality preached? It seems that individuality is promoted by words, but is in reality quite discouraged.

Ants are part of a herd..

No individualities there, besides the eventual difference in job description..

If you had the means, wouldn't you go live in some place 'less crowded'?

Maybe we're being forcefully herded ..

:-)

It's like being in a great team (herd). Teams composes of individuals who are trained to excel with their specific capability. As a whole however, individuality cannot be above the interest of the team. The herd is more important than individuals.

We're taught to be both united, but also individual. In general, there's strength and safety in numbers, so we instinctively try to be part of that "herd" that you speak of. However, individuality is preached because without it, there wouldn't be any advances in our society. Every advencement in technology or culture is made when someone tries something new (ie, individuality).

I believe that individuality is preached because people want to standout, be noticed, and get attention.

There are some things that shouldn't be individually based. It is much better to have 100 companies with 1000 employees each, than 100000 companies with one employee each. There is power in unity.

I think because what makes us attractive to each other is our quirks and individual traits. I mean, think about it. The reason people desire and attain thriving relationships is because they found someone "different" from all of the rest. And since our main purpose of being here is to procreate, then whoever stands out the most gets to procreate more!
I dunno, I just kind of pulled that out of my a**. We're kind of all a herd no matter what simply because we're all human - even the most "individual" human of the bunch is still grazing on our big pasture called Earth. (that was a good one, eh? :) EH?)

We are evolved to be a social animal. There is a subtle, but real difference between herd animals and social animals. For instance; fish schools are herds, while dogs are social animals. Think about it; study it.

Individuality is perceived as being selfish but often reminded to take care of ones self.
In order to love another you must first be able to love your-self.
