No one knows for sure. There is some evidence that through history North, Central and South America was visited by many people.
In Central Amrica the Olmecs have huge heads that have ******* Features. There is DNA evidence on the West Coast that many Indian tribes are the decendents of Mongoloid peoples. There is also speculation that even the Eygyptians may have visited the new world.
Irish and Norsemen also visited the New world but left no permanent settlements.

I think the original person(s) were of Native American desent but the first European was Leif Erickson about 300 to 400 years before Columbus set sail for the New World. I am not sure why Leif and his band of Vikings came but I am sure it was in search of a warmer climate!! LOL!! As for Chief Howling Wind and Saint Brendan I can not comment as I have not heard of them before

The first european was Leif Erikson and his followers. They built settlements in Greenland and down the eastern seaboard, but not much tangible evedence has survived.

It was Leif Erikson, and he discovered it by accident. They went there on hunting expeditions.

Dont forget the chinese might have been here as well with the largest ships ever made at the time sent to explore the world.
