I too, am a redneck/hillbilly and I am dang proud of it!!!! AMERICAN BY BIRTH, SOUTHERN BY THE GRACE OF GOD.
People always make fun of or hate what they dont know or understand. It is a sterotype that all southerners dont have shoes, no indoor plumbing, we wipe with corn cobs, we screw our family, we all fly rebel flags, we are ignorant, and the list goes on and on and on and on.

There has long been a form of prejudice against southerners in America.
Stephen Colbert said that, as a kid (southern, a Carolina I think, but I forget which one), he noticed that a southern accent in movies and on TV was a way of telling the audience "this person's dumb" (or worse) -- which is why he rid himself of his accent.
The funny thing about 'redneck' however (as you can see from some of the answers) is that many rednecks applaud the word, so there's no consensus that it's an insult.
I would hardly describe the current treatment of Latinos and Muslims as being "bombarded with protection" as they face ugly speech and behavior on a daily basis.
If someone calls you a redneck, and you find the term insulting, let that person know politely (see the writing of Miss Manners for how to register insult to provoke an apology, rather than a fight).
When a term is used humorously by some, and considered insulting by others, we non-southerners have no way of knowing whether it's derogatory (to the recipient) or not.
The idea is for everyone to cease and desist all hate and degrading speech toward everyone.
(Dang! That means I have to give up my favorite pastime of male bashing. I HATE integrity!)

Great question. I was born and raised in the south. I'm a paramedic and I work at a hospital in Alabama. I encounter physicians everywhere from India and Pakistan because the US recruits physicians from those regions. I would never speak to them the way they speak to some of the people here. I hear them calling patients names all the time but what would they do if those same patients called them typical ethnic names? As for the "N" word, I will not use it. I crenge when I hear other medics call in patient reports and give any kind of race i/e:"I'm inbound with a 35 year old white/black/hispanic male." It makes no difference in what kind of care anyone should recieve. All patients should recieve the best care that the medic can provide and I hate it when others can't see that. I teach my students that.

There aren't any "race laws" guided towards any particular race. Although in certain social and academic socials you look like a moron making racial comments, there is no law saying that you can't make nasty comments about someone based on superficial features like skin color or ethnic descent.
The only "folk" in this country that have honestly been discriminated against who have lived in the US for centuries are Native Americans. I have never ever heard of a southerner being discriminated against, infact white people have always had it pretty damn good in the US. Your people have never been systematically killed or forced to move off their land into reservations while your children were sent off to become more "American" and no one in your family has ever been a slave or the victim of race-related violence.
Get real.

It's called hypocracy. What ever is convinient to let people get away with is what the law favors at the time. Just like when it was okay for whites to discriminate against blacks in the 40's. NO ONE should be allowed to discriminate.
It irritates me that women get to bash men in tv commercials, T-shirt adds, etc., but if a guy did it, pure redicule. I'm against any kind of unfairness.

Basically, because whites havent raised enough hell about it. Same with guys constantly being the but of jokes to women on tv, radio, movies, etc. Whites and men have become completely ballless and far too apologetic.
Now, one can take the approach which I take. I dont let others set the rules for me. I say what I wish. I use words which I decide are appropriate, not which others decided are on my behalf. If others dont like it, fine. No constitutional amendment grants you the right to not be offended or to not have things said which you dont like.
My stance is thus. A person is free to hate anyone they wish or to like anyone they wish, with or without cause. Others can say what they like, as can I. Dont limit what others say and dont let others limit you.

I always get called a redneck. You bring up a great point. If there are laws against saying the "N" word then why not redneck? Go to hell Government and make a law for every race.

That's the one of the reasons discrimination isn't going away. It's perfectly all right for minorities to call whites derogatory names (ie cracker, honky gringo etc) but if a white uses a racial slant...Look out! Turn on any black radio station and their talk is criminal as far as racism goes. The schools and the military are the same way. It's scary and I don't know what lame brain is responsible for the double standard. But it's there and definitely in the way of equality.
