Subtract 1/5 on each side to isolate the variable:
a/2=17-1/5--->a/2=16 4/5
Multiply both sides by 2 to further isolate the variable:
a=168/5 or 33 3/5

Okay:
a/2 + 1/5 = 17
Subtract 1/5 from both sides
a/2 = 16 4/5
Multiply both sides by 2
a = 32 8/5 or, 33 3/5

a/2 + 1/5 - 1/5 = 17 - 1/5
a/2 = 84/5
a/2 * 2 = 84/5 * 2
a = 168/5 = 33 3/5
Now do a bunch so you learn it....otherwise you will never pass the exam!

a/2+1/5=17
subtract 1/5 from both sides
a/2=85/5-1/5
multiply both sides by 2
a/2(2)=84/5(2)
a=168/5
a=33.6

Take it one step at a time. You need to isolate the term with the variable. What do you need to do to both sides of the equation to get a/2 by itself? Then what do you have?
You'll have a/2= something
now - what do you need to do to both sides of the equation to get the a completely by itself? (Hint - you need to multiply both sides by something to cancel out that denominator)
