I am considering opening a pet supply store in the northeast region and I would like to get some input on products, foods etc. that some pet owners would like to see available. Any input would certainly help. Thank you.

if you had fresh baked dog biscuits available for your dog would you prefer those over the box variety?

I will not sell pets at this store. However, I would like to have one pet a week (called pet of the week) in to be seen for potential adoption from a local shelter. is this something you would agree or disagree with?

It's what SHOULDN'T be available that is MORE important!

Fresh baked is preferred only if the price is reasonable. Pet of the week is awesome - our local pet stores have kittens/cats in a huge cage from the local shelter up for adoption- and they go reasonably fast. They also do Pet visitations to local nursing homes- good publicity for them and the nursing homes- coincidental also good for the residents. I love guppy min for my guppies, I love petamine for my baby parakeets, I'll try to give you more info later I have a lot of pets and try new things with them all the time- By the way Please carry horse treats and at least 10% grain and oats (enough to tide some one over so they don't have to make an extra stop at the local co-op) the pet stores around here don't carry horse items and its a pain not having one stop shopping when it comes to my animals.

First of all thank you for not wanting to sell pets and instead have some for adoption from local shelters. The selling of pets at the pet stores only perpetuate the problems involved in breeding.

What I would most like to see is natural products. Foods for the pets that don't contain chemicals and dyes. I don't eat that crap myself and I don't feed it to my babies. I often have to make a trip to specialty pet stores just to get them good foods.

Yes, fresh baked (all natural preferably) biscuits are definitely better than boxed. Boxed = YUK!!!!

Another big thing...a knowledgeable well trained staff.

I like to feed my dog Nutro, which can only be found in pet supply stores like PetSmart, etc where I live. I think it would be a good product to carry if you can get it. There are also several premium dog foods out there that people say are very good: Solid Gold, Newman's Own, Wellness, Canidae, etc. I have wanted to try these, but they are difficult to locate where I live. One thing to note: I don't live in the Northeast, so I don't know the availability of those foods where you live.

I love animals. I get my pets' innoculations from a local feed store, & give them myself. Also nice getting higher quality pet foods at a 'not much higher' price. Enjoy getting free samples to try on my pets. Instructional books are nice to have available. Also NATURAL (environmentally safe) products to eradicate fleas & other pests. It would be great if you sold a product like Urine Gone. I think (I KNOW) people would really appreciate being able to get it. Have-A Heart animal traps to rent out might be helpful to people. For instance, if there's a feral animal they want to get spayed or neutered. You might supply bedding or warmers for dogs and cats if you are in a colder region. Sometimes older pets are comforted by heat, especially if they're arthritic--you'd want to be sure of safety issues. Leashes & collars are certainly appropriate. You might consider offering occasional spay/neuter &/or innoculation clinics. Also pet treats. Remember a lot of folks are into feeding birds and squirrels. Then there are those who DON'Tcare for animals. You might offer animal repellants or "how to" books on keeping animals away from property. There are GENTLE ways to do this. I'll never forget some guy telling me he shot at woodpeckers that were bothering him. Such muderous acts are completely unneccessary. I've read various non-lethal ways to discourage animals. Try thinking outside the box a bit. This might attract more folks to your new store. Also gates to keep pets from certain areas of the home. Various chains and hooks are nice to have. Forgot, I'm always looking for various pet toys (birds, dogs, cats). You might offer photos sometimes, & put some pet/owner pix up on a bulletin board to make people happy! In the past, I've also bought rabbit leashes---can be rather hard to find. Let me know if I can help anymore. Best of luck!

It depends on the region you live in. If you are in a city chances are you will not have much need for supplies for rabbits but lots of need for supplies for animals more suited to apartments and being kept indoors. When you figure out which type of animals people are able to keep in your area make sure you stock up on food, bedding, cages or aquariums, medicine, vitamins, toys, and the animals themselves. Then, to keep it interesting you could occasionally offer something a bit exotic like a chinchilla or a sugar glider as long as you follow all your state's regulations about permits. Make sure you learn about every animal you offer for sale so you can advise people how to care for it. If you don't you will end up with a lot of people talking about how their pet came from your shop and was sickly or died. Keep books on the care of as many animals as possible even if you don't offer all of those animals for sale. Most people with a pet have more than one and often they have pets of different kinds. If they stop in your store they will expect you to have a good variety of books.

I'm in the northwest and we have a local pet store here that carries excellent brand food - as in no grocery store buys - I LOVE this. All the brands they have are highly nutritional with minimal fillers unlike whiskeys or whatever crap they're selling these days. Also they have comfy beds, durable toys, classy looking food dishes. They have a bakery for dog and cat treats that you just cant resist! They smell good to the pets and to us!

I can find many stores that have a wide variety of products for cats and dogs but have a hard time finding a store with alot to offer for ferrets. A store that takes all types of animals into consideration is a store I would prefer to shop at.

You should sell fish food, dog and cat food, live crickets and mealworms for reptiles, and all other kinds of food like rabbit and hamster food. You should sell dog toys, reptile tanks, goldfish tanks, Note: you should get a few fish and breed them and sell those. About the home made dog treats, dont do that. there could be something wrong with it. Eukenuba is the best dog food. Its your pet store, come up with some other things

Well it's good you don't want to sell pets, that would possibly give your store a bad reputation. I suggest selling various toys, such as kong, selling quality dog food, [I know there are lists about quality dog food and such, I just can't find them.] first aid kits, beds, bowls, and things for little critters to! I love the idea of "Pet of The Month", it would give dogs another chance, and it would show you care about shelter animals. Good luck!

Oh like a pet feed store??? OMG im planning on doing the same for people who want more but cant find it in the local store.

I would like to see more natural pet foods. I plan to open a store that only sells stuff like Innova, or Natural Balance....and if possilbe Life's Abundance. As well as home grown bermuda/timothy hay for the small pet owners. Big brand hay companies often make poor hay and its not mix put in one bag (bermuda is quite pricy to buy). I grow my own.

the basics of course...collers, kittie litter, blah blah blah.

Health stuff wud be pretty kool to find in a store (tear remover, ear care, dental...)

Home made biscuts sounds great too!!!

Provide more pet books! I have found more info books (on dog feeding and care) about pets in Barnes & Noble. There is such a small veriety in stores.

Also I would love to see more salt/fresh water (solution or bottled) for other pets such as fish or hermit crabs. I find few petstores that keep them in stock.

More small buisness stuff (they seem to make better pet products such as Life's Abundance)

Good Luck!
