I recommnend daily lap swimming --build up to where you are doing at least 1/2 mile nonstop of "crawl." Start with 1/4 mile of backstroke though.

My knees and ankles are bad and I ruptured L4 and L5 together i 1996 but haven't had major problems since because of lap swimming.

Keep a small store of cyclobenzaprine ("Flexeril") and Tylenol 3 to break any spasms that happen to your back -- I use that stuff about 2ce a year for about 2 days.

Surgery only helps about 50% of the time and invites further surgery every 5 years or so that limits flexibility.

There are Homeopathic rxs. to help ease and possibly suspend your knee and backpain. I would highly suggest finding a good Classical Homeopath instead of self prescribing. I am also a disabled vet and have already had my L4-L5 disc removed due to a bad MVA. Ironicaly enough I am also a Homeopath here in Tx. Feel free to email me at barefoothomeopath@yahoo.com to see if we can hook you up w/ a practitioner in your area. There is nothing worse than back or tooth pain, I feel for you. Good luck.

Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Herbal Therapies -- each one can provide pain relief and promote healing. For me, aromatherapy gives the fastest pain relief. All of these therapies may be used in conjunction with one another. Some essential oils do antidote homeopathy, so you just need to let your homeopath know which oils you are using.

I'm a Vet too and V.A. sucks. Get a Doctor to give you 5mg. Predisone a day. Some days you will have to take two. Also 8 tramadol a day an 8 tyenols a day. lodeine 500mg. 2 times a day.
It will make life a little easier.
