Do you think I really should find some way of getting all those undeveloped exposed films developed or should I send them by post rather than take them on the plane with me?

Higher speed film is more susceptible to x-ray exposure, and some airports' machine are tuned more intensely than others. Since 9/11, the leadlined bags I used to carry have become more of a hassle since security needs to look inside. And I have seen damage from x-ray machines in my photos (halos, streaks) if I don't develop them before leaving.

Definitely do not put them in checked baggage, since those machines use a high amount of x-rays to scan. You could ask security to handcheck your exposed film, but some airport personnel ignore you anyway. Best bet is to have them developed and printed before departing.

I've never had a problem with that. My film has gone through exray scanner for carry on, sat in the suitcase for six months and still come out fine.

The checked baggage scanner will erase it. Take it out before you check your bags and they'll put it in for you after it's gone through.
