Christianity.

At the time Martin Luther posted his theses on the door of the cathedral, which is considered the start of the Reformation, most Western Europeans had one flavor of Christianity--the Catholic Church. During the reformation, the "reformers" such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, etc. all started different Christian religions that did not include what they thought was blasphemous or misinterpreted in Catholic dogma. Their goal was to get back to a personal interpretation of scripture and develop a personal relationship with God.

Luckily, this was helped by the first widespread use of the printing press and the translation of The Bible into the European vulgate languages (i.e. not Latin). Thus, people could read and interpret scripture without a priest as a go-between.

Those who protested Catholicism along with Luther, later became known as Protestants.

The reformation in a nutshell.
