I think at one time back long ago we did have somewhat more pride than we do now. But I have to say we have never been close to perfect. Success of a country does not mean it is an honest country. Even when it seemed presidents had more honor they owned slaves. Now presidents are involved in every scandal there can be.

I think the main problem is that many Americans don't take an active part in our country anymore. The feeling being if it doesn't affect me who cares. Well many problems with corruption today would not be if Americans would stand together under the Constitution like we use to. And demand honesty, accountability, honor and those in office to uphold their oaths to that office and the people. Another two reasons are greed and loss of the Moral Fabric that once made America Strong, plus it's mockery of the Good Lord and His word. It is becoming more and more a land of "Bread and Circuses." As in New Orleans whole neighborhoods still uninhabited while they spend $185,000,000 on a stadium.

How did we get so corrupt from the big government to the court house to the police playing good cop bad cop. Tis a crying shame when so many people just wanted to live in the free America. We have a constitutional right of the pursuit of happiness as long as it is not hurting someone else why do they want to take all our freedoms away. We have the right of freedom of religion and freedom of speech. Do people really understand where we as a nation are headed. Stop! I am so sorry for our country for what I have seen. God knows we need him if you know Him give thanks and praise him. He wanted mercy this land wants punishment. He wanted people to love and forgive one another. Most think to use and hurt one another or get over on the other guy. The love of money what will you do. The funny thing is all things of money and price is all man made. Father help us please let us turn back, let us be free, to share to care to help to see. Step by step, but we need it fast some things are better you let it go than to punish when you yourselves are guilty.

It's been a slow decline for the past several decades, going faster downhill over the past decade or so.

We lost our way when politicians were able to gerrymander the system so that they kept getting re-elected and were able to force what should have been a coalitional multi-party system into what is effectively a two-party plutocracy.

But corruption is common in every government, and that's not the major reason we have lost respect in the world. The major reason is that the US is run by hypocrites. Our own govt doesn't follow its own rules. So, how do we have any credibility when we try to tell other countries to follow the rules.

Yes eve, they have lost respect. I gather it has to do with going about taking the world's problems and trying to solve them, without getting support from the body of countries.

The two political parties have been in sync when 9/11 hit, so it seems that the minority party (the Democrats) wanted to ally themselves with the Republicans to show solidarity.

Now they seem to be separating again due to the failure of Iraq and the approaching election.

The Democrats were "sucked in" to what Bush wanted to do, and went along.

I'm not making this up, I have letters from my Congressman saying he was proud of our troops and they are doing a good job. He's a Democrat.

Now they are changing their tune, because our troops are like sitting ducks, and over twenty thousand of them are returning with permanent injuries (and that's going to weigh heavy on the rest of us).

This so-called war on terrorism requires more smarts and less military. It requires use of high technology to isolate would-be attackers and destroy them where the breed.

This idea hasn't been thought of as yet, but I am very sure it will be implemented soon.

The use of military occupying another country is just what the world doesn't want.

So, elect a leader who will return our good souls in uniform, give them every credit they deserve (don't treat them like the Viet Nam vets).

Elect a leader who will go about terrorism intelligently.

Thankyou.

first off our government is not corrupt, we are strong and solid. think back to your history classes, corrupt is when the leader of your country commits terrible crimes and the military is everywhere on the streets, doing whatever they please. Iraq was corrupt. The media only portrays our government to be corrupt because the media is very liberal and we have a good conservative president. The media turns all uneducated voters into liberals, making our government look bad. The parties definitly aren't the same, republicans stand for freeing the war from terror and liberals seem to want to wait until after there is an attack, then they still don't want to do anything. The only people that lose respect for our country are the ones that are uneducated and base their entire opinion of us on what the media tells them. Please don't be one of those people.

I don't think corruption is the problem...

the problem is apathy...people don't take the time to research the issues, keep politicians in check and vote!

we "the people" are responsible for our government and if we or you don't like the government we/you need to do something about it...

I think people in the US are pretty lazy and more concerned w/making everyone "feel good" than actually working hard and trying to make a difference.

If you don't like the government...organize, and find and support candidates who will work for your causes...otherwise...quit b#@ching...because the truth is the politicians give their constituents what they want...so if you aren't getting what you want you need to get the people elected who will do that...that's not corruption...it's Federalism...

this is why the seniors have such pull in American Politics...they are organized, they care and they fight for their rights and beliefs... they are the greatest generation and the world will be much sadder when they are gone!

You forgot to point that individuals who pay taxes ought to artwork approximately 5-6 months to pay them. flow forward, upload all of it up. earnings tax, belongings tax, sales tax, advert valorem tax, on and on....is approximately 40-50% of peoples earnings. Given this, the government continuously needs extra. as quickly as we are in a recession and the government passes a "Stimulus invoice" that contains money for the Salt Marsh Mouse, tan parlors and kickbacks to ACORN...you're rattling appropriate people ought to voice how the government ought to spend their money. there is not any doubt that a lot of people stay above their skill. people do not shop for retirement the two. you're appropriate approximately that. So how does that justify the government pissing away difficult earned money it is paid in taxes? 2 wrongs make a appropriate? Raymond C. is right. have you ever bought wholesome nutrition on the shop? much extra costly than McDonalds.

About 7000 years ago. People were killing their own brothers for a kingdom.

It seems the only people who have lost respect for America is indoctrinated children in America who have nothing better to do then to parrot things on the computer.

governments are a necessary evil..that's paraphrasing some famous person but i don't remember who. by nature government is always corrupt. what they say about power you know...it corrupts. what i think has happened is that we are more aware of it all..due to news and the speed it travels now..we see the obseen as it happens where in the past by the time people knew what was going on another administration was in office..but politics has always been the same. if you haven't read taylor caldwell...pick up dear an glorious physican or captians and kings...some of her stuff is rather mushy..but she had to get a stupid story going to get her political perspective published.
