Both Doggie and Zivien are right. Kosciusko and Pulaski were both Polish aristocrats that volunteered to help the struggling American Revolution. Kosciusko is honored with a statue in Lafayette Square in Washington, and Pulaski has many towns and counties named after him, not just the highway. Both were revered in their times nearly as much as Lafayette.

Casimir Pulaski, polish gentry, served with the Americans as the commander of a mounted Legion, which was about the size of a regiment, I believe. I don't believe that he served with General Washington, his major battles were under the command of General Lincoln. He was mortally wounded at Savannah in 1780 (?) and has a section of Rte 40 near Baltimore named after him.
