WOW this is a HUGELY discussed/argued topic, in the long run, just pick the one that you are able to understand more about, this will help in the long run because alot of computers' programing is based on how the data is organized and stored. Go to an apple store and some electronics store (i recomend best buy) and try a pc to compare how they work. they do the same thing, just a different setup. macs are a tad more buff in the media point of view like recording, live music etc, whereas windows is a huge advantage in online gaming, web pages, other internet based tasks; although this is begining to change with the latest series of macs that have internet explorer and can email to a pc, and vise versa. they're starting to come together into one system but it will take at least 5 years before they are virtulally the same thing. as for now, they're getting closer. hope this helps good luck in your choice.

Condition 1: Ease of use:
Windows is easy to use, Mac is easy to use. It depends on what you are used to (if you are used to neither of the two, it doesn't matter - choose on the second condition)

Condition 2: Support
Windows is supported more widely, most applications are available for it. The availability of Internet Explorer could be a pro-argument for companies that have to use old ActiveX-based intranet-applications.
Nevertheless, for Mac OS, there are tens of thousands of applications for most of the daily use. It's really just the specialized applications you could have problems with

Condition 3: Price
Mac hardware is more expensive but worth the money, definitely. But if you want a low-quality computer, you will get a better device for less money on Windows.
"Mac mini" is cheap, but without a display.

Both. it depends what you want. Windows has a lot of features but is restricted to alot of things. Mac OS X can do alot of things faster and better then windows. But the choice is yours. I would start off with windows.

windows is compatible with much more stuff, is much more user friendly and, in my experience, a much lower rick of losing stuff. as for people saying macs don't get spyware or viruses, they are wrong, they are just more abundant on Windows. And if you have a good antispyware (i suggest Spy Sweeper) and antivirus program (I suggest Trendmicro Antivirus, not Norton), then you should be fine.

alo, windows is coming out with Vista, but new OSs are never good when they come out, but you could just upgrade to a vista from an XP in a year or two. most things compatable with vista will be compatable with XP and vice versa. also I have Windows media center which stores all my digital media in one place, like movies, music, pictures, and you can record TV with it, in a TiVo-esque fashon

Macs are a good system to get, but i recommend a windows just because the parts are easier to replace, and all the current software is compatible to windows. Apple has to rewrite everything for mac because they each read software differenly.

Mac is making a strong push of becoming less proprietary.
However, they still don't have all the freedoms that intel/windows computers do.

See if you can input/hookup all your gadgets into the mac, that can be used on the PC. I think this still is a problem for the mac.

Macs are better by far:
- don't crash
- don't need to boot up (set them to sleep and they always 'wake up' in seconds)
- far easier to use (once you get used to if you come from windows) or from the start if you're a new starter to computers
- no viruses or adware or spyware
- much better at working with pictures or music or movies.
