The books are incredible. JK Rowling is a well-educated author who is clearly totally in touch with who kids are. Her books are filled with classical imagery, and her characters and stories are filled with depth. The stories are very coherent (not surprising, since she had the whole series planned before she started writing the first book).
I don't think she was out to make a lot of money, like some people here are saying. This is because she had the story planned, but she didn't really think that they would take off the way they did. I think she just had a story to tell and she went out to tell it.
The movies, on the other hand, are so-so. They miss out on so much of the richness of the books. The movies are clearly the movie industry's attempt to make money off an already popular character. If no one had ever read the books, I don't think the movies would have made it so big.
As for the Christian controversy, I think that a lot of Christians are shooting themselves in the foot by boycotting the books. JK Rowling is a Christian, too (not a Satanist like some slanderers have claimed), and her books, especially Chamber of Secrets, are filled with Christian imagery. She is a big fan of C.S. Lewis' books, and she clearly uses him as a role model.

Hi, my name is Kami and I'm a Harry Potter fanatic. Yes, I've been addicted to the books and movies for some time now. I used to believe that I could quit reading them and watching them whenever I wanted to, but that was a lie....
Seriously though, I think that the series is a lot of fun. It has encouraged people around the world to take the time to read, which is pretty remarkable considering all the other forms of entertainment that are available now (TV, computers, video games, etc.) Plus, they are thought provoking, as they include the ever relevant topics of elitism, classism, racism, love, loyalty, friendship, honesty, integrity, guilt and peer-pressure. I also like the way that J.K. Rowling has incorporated creatures from myths and legends from around the world into the stories.

I think the books are well written, fabulous in fact. However, they have the ability to have people get fanatical to an irritation. The movies were horrible because they were done by poor actors, and worse yet, most of the story lines were missing!
Good reading for high school students (nearly based on highschool) don't know why parents push the book into a 2nd grader or 3rd graders hand as if it were a religion though.

I think the Harry Potter series is the most remarkable thing to happen to children's literature in a very long time. It is very well written, avoids the Politically Correct cliches, and is enormously thought-provoking. Parents and grandparents can share it with the kids, giving them a vocabulary to talk about things that otherwise would be impossible to talk about. Just one example: the invention of the term "muggle" to be the wizarding world's equivalent to "gentile."
There's a lot of real information in the series, you know. For example, most of the "famous witches and wizards" depicted on the chocolate frog cards are real historical figures.

Illusions and fantasies for childern can be a good thing, but in my day the idea was that there was some sort of lesson morally, ethically, or at least socally, in such stories, I don't see that in Harry Potter or much of anything else for the youth of today.
Such a pity how people can understand that hate can be tought and yet seem to believe that morals and ethics grow on trees, or through osmosis!

hate it, movies are alrite but i can not stand the over hyped and over publisized plot to the story. think about it, a witch's school, a person with a scar on his forhead that hurts a little, thats blander than paris hilton's acting carrear. all in all harry potter its a pass.
