The reason the option is so effective in college is that the majority of the talent on a football team is generally in the backfield. That is, they use it because they have to. In the NFL, everyone is talented (by comparison.) Your quarterback has to be willing to take quite a beating to play the option all the time. And I think we all know they're making too much money to be doing that :)

No, I don't think they're obsolete at all. In fact, 2 of the greatest are still playing: LT and All Day,. I think what happened is a couple of teams (mainly Giants and Panthers) had success with a committee approach and all sorts of teams wanted the same thing. But it hasn't worked out for most of them. The Cowboys are a good example. They should have bitten the bullet and gotten a true every down back, workhorse type. I also think there may be a couple guys in the NFL right now who are capable of monster stats if their HC's would stop trying to be so creative. And now the Panthers look a little silly. They have 2 RBs capable of playing every down, and that's overkill.

It's the talent level. Only about 10% of the players who play college football, make it in the pros. 325 college teams (all divisions) and 32 pro teams.
This means the worst defensive player on the worst pro team, is still fast and mean and can knock you're QB slap out on a given play. Plus, there are 3 or 4 more on the sidelines waiting to play.
How many QB's do you have on any given Sunday? Only 2 or 3 now, teams used to keep more back in the old days, 4 or 5 QB's.

NFL linebackers are too fast and too big. And they don't give a crap whether the QB has the ball or not; his *** is getting planted.
Too many option QB's on the IR and you can't run the option anymore.

Given the speed of NFL players, you would eventually have a lot of severely damaged QB's laying around.

You can't compare the two because the NFL is much harder and much different. That why some people that do good in college don't do good in the NFL or the other way around.

Quarterbacks are big $$$$$$. Teams don't want the risk of their QB getting drilled trying to pick up 5 or 6 yds.

In college, players tend to over-pursue the play, in the Pro's the players are much smarter. And who wants there starting quarter back that makes millions to put himself unnessesary danger.
