I have bipolar mental disorder, When I was in the lowest brink of depression, I couldn't stop
crying either. I stayed indoor and mostly in bed for almost 2 yrs. My depression was so bad. That I had to be hospitalized for four months.
Try to zero in what is really the key factor that makes you feel despondent. Do not isolate yourself. Go with friends. Talk it out. Watch TV or listen to happy music. Go dancing. Go to funny movies. Force yourself to get out of bed. Go to this computer and answer questions. It's a very good diversional therapy. Go to the neighbor and offer help. Volunteer in hospitals.
You'll find out more people are in a worse situation than you are. I always look at my cup as half full. But of course, I'm under medications. Get a good night sleep. Read a book. Try associating with happy people. Misery doesn't love company. Try, praying to God. Go to church and make friends. Ask a friend to go with you on a cruise. You'll find the experience very exhilarating. If you keep yourself busy, you have no time to be sad and to cry. Let me tell you a joke. What do you call a cow that just gave birth... Answer... decaffeinated. Got it. What's the position 69 in Chinese ? Two can chew. Say it fast and with an accent.

I strongly believe from personal experience, friends with similar issues, that depression is best treated with both medication and therapy. You need to establish whether you're depressed. When you say "lately," just how much time are you talking about? Two weeks or two months? If two weeks, you can try these simple things suggested to you, do anything positive (with a big effort I know) when the sadness strikes. But if it's almost two months or more that you've been feeling like this and nothing ishelping, then you should absolutely talk to a doctor. You can see your internist if you like him/her for a start, or interview psychologists and psychiatrists over the phone (ask people for references) until you click with someone and go see them and take anti-depressants. You will feel better within a week.

Generally speaking, the mystics would say that you are experiencing a wave of sadness, or difficulty, and it will pass.
From a Western perspective, with tinges of Eastern Knowledge, I suspect you are quite angry, and are finding it difficult to surrender to events. The opposite of hate is grief, and of anger is sadness. Repressed anger is often quite similar to depression.
It might be that your MIND has edged you into a bout with resentment [which is usually dishonest] and not realising this, and since it is being repressed, you are being allowed by your MIND to "vent" the energy of this in sadness and "feeling low".
Take a careful look at your life, and at those in your life and ask yourself what about all or any of this is causing you some resentment? Keep at it until you can "see" it. Then when you do, make a point of forgiving what you are not accepting, and forgive yourself as well.
Peace

Depending on whatever it is that has you down, you might find that some wounds take longer to heal, but only you can stop them from scarring your mind. here's what i always do when i'm down. first, get away from whatever it is that reminds you of the reason you're down. second, treat yourself to a big ice cream shake. third, watch a sunset, or just walk around town (maybe you might not want to do this if you live in a bad neighborhood). chances are, you deserve/need to be alone for a while. then, go out with some friends. it'll cure your spirits for sure.

What's the source of your problem? Relationship? Money? Boredom? I would say get outside and take a walk and find something interesting to catch you attention and appreciate that.

I don't really know what's going on with your life or nothing; I would just say to try to stop thinking about whatever is on your mind and try to stay busy. Whatever it is, it'll get better. It has to.

do something nice for someone else... would suggest not taking advise from here, although you might want to speak to a close friend or your local health professional.
